Body Alignment practitioner - Janet Yates
About Janet
Janet obtained her degree in Psychology from Stellenbosch University, followed by a counseling diploma from the South African College of Applied Psychology. She later trained in Directed Pressure Point Technique (DPPT) and, in 2004, opened her own practice in Somerset West.
Over the years, Janet researched various holistic techniques that share a common philosophy: the body’s remarkable ability to heal itself, if not hindered by factors like poor posture, stress, and lifestyle. Her special interest in the impact of emotional stress on the body became a cornerstone of her approach.
In 2013, she synthesized her expertise to develop the Body Alignment modality. This unique approach combines physical and emotional techniques to promote self-healing. By 2017, Janet was eager to pass on her knowledge and began teaching Body Alignment through hands-on, practical courses. During the COVID pandemic, she expanded her offerings to include online training, making her approach more accessible to students worldwide.
Today, Janet continues to work and teach from her office in Somerset West.
Body Alignment is a therapeutic approach focused on correcting imbalances in the body’s structure to promote natural healing and enhance physical function. By targeting misalignments and tension, this practice helps relieve pain, improve posture, and increase mobility.

Neck & Shoulders
Misalignment of the neck area may cause dizzyness, headaches, facial tics.

Back
Misalignment of the lower back may lead to digestive prolems, sciatica, pain in the sacroiliac joint, hip, knee and ankle problems.

Elbow
Misalignment of the elbow may cause tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, pins and needles in fingers.

Q&A with Janet
Q: What inspired you to create your own modality, and what were some of the challenges you faced developing it?
A: Studying Directed Pressure Point Technique introduced me to the philosophy that the body has an incredible ability to heal itself. I became deeply curious and attended every course I could find that aligned with this way of thinking.
This was back in 2004, before Google became the instant resource it is today. I had to physically attend these courses, which, in hindsight, was a blessing. It gave me the chance to connect with like-minded people, build a network, and discover even more opportunities for learning.
I was determined to incorporate this knowledge into my practice, but I faced significant resistance. I believed strongly that my clients would benefit from a multi-pronged approach to healing. So, after seven years of working under the Directed Pressure Point Technique banner, I made the decision to create Body Alignment.
It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My confidence in the practice carried me through, and the business naturally grew from there.
🌿 Body Alignment was born from a passion for empowering the body to heal itself and a commitment to truly serve others.
What motivated you to begin teaching, and how has that journey been for you?
A: For years, my friends, clients, and even a little voice in my head encouraged me to share my knowledge and teach Body Alignment. At first, I had no idea where to begin or how to go about it.
One thing I knew for sure was that it would be a shame if this modality wasn’t passed on. Body Alignment has helped so many people release pain and heal their bodies—it felt wrong to imagine it not continuing to help others in the future.
I’m a big believer in letting your subconscious work through life’s dilemmas if you give it the time and space to do so. Teaching stayed at the back of my mind for a while, quietly waiting for its moment. Then, one day, without planning it, I sat down in my office and started sketching out the Body Alignment course. Ideas flowed effortlessly, and within six months, I was teaching my first student.
Since then, teaching has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. Seeing that light bulb moment when a student realises they can do this is priceless. Watching their confidence and self-empowerment grow is incredibly heartwarming.
Every time I see practitioners gathered at our workshops, I feel so proud of what we’ve built and of the ripple effect Body Alignment is creating in the world.

Q: Could you elaborate on what Body Alignment entails and how it differs from other modalities you have studied?
A: Most modalities tend to focus on the area where the pain is felt. Body Alignment, however, recognises that the body works as an interconnected whole. A misalignment in one area often causes a chain reaction elsewhere.
So while we do address the site of pain, we also work on the entire body to correct the root cause. For example, the erector spinae muscles run alongside the spine, from the coccyx to the base of the skull, keeping the spine erect. Poor posture, like hours of sitting incorrectly, can misalign the lower back. This tension can travel all the way up to the neck, causing headaches.
If I only focused on relieving neck tension, the headache would persist because the true origin of the pain is the lower back. Body Alignment not only relieves muscle tension but also corrects the body’s structural alignment, improving neural communication between the body and the brain.
Pain left unchecked can result in deeper damage, but with Body Alignment, we help the body heal itself—naturally and holistically. 🌿
